Building Technology

Choosing your natural building technique and materials

There are lots of natural building techniques existing in our globe, as many as you can dream and imagine.
Over the years we realize how challenging and confusing it is for our clients the process of learning and choosing which natural building method to choose from, as lots of miss information, concerns, and many questions coming up

our chosen natural building technologies

We had chosen to focus on few natural building technologies and to be leading expert on them.

We wish to support you to understand them better and provide you clear understanding what are the advantages and disadvantages of each one as we see it, so you can choose which technology is the right one for you.

Rammed Earth

We love all natural building techniques, but we believe that rammed earth is the “crown jewel”, with so many advantages, we see it as the most advanced building technique over the others, with free maintenance that can last 1000 years.

This wall system can be found all over the globe, in all the continents except Antarctica, in wide variation of climates like – tropical with lots of rain, high humidity with moderate temperature and also in desert with very low humidity with high heat and cold nights temperature.

Insulated rammed earth for cold climents

Rammed earth works amazing even in north america and Europe where in the winters the temperature goes below 0, rammed earth wall can be build using added insulation material, integrated inside the walls or as external insulation, what makes Rammed Earth the ultimate wall system

Stabilized rammed earth mixture

Making rammed earth walls requires high compaction of a humid mixture of soil that has suitable proportions of gravel, sand, silt, clay, and stabilazer, than You can put it into any formwork to create the desired structure.

We use cement as a stabilizer in the mixture to improve the quality and efficiency of the Rammed Earth walls. We use cement in a fixed percentage of each mixture and by doing this we allow the engineer to get the technical data he needs to calculate loads and strengths of the Rammed Earth walls, in a proper way and without much deviation compared to a mixture that does not use cement. when the engineer have all the data he needs, he can calculate see that in many cases Rammed Earth walls engineering plans can be approved without additional skeleton of concrete , Wood or iron, which saves a lot of money on the project.

cool in the day warm in the night

rammed earth walls are an excellent for energy retention. You gain the benefits of an environmentally friendly construction material while receiving high levels of insulative qualities simultaneously. The thick walls can retain heat during the day, and then slowly release it at night to the structure. during colder months this walls retain the heat that we use for heating the house and slowly release it back to the house when we stop the heating and the, and the opposite in the hot summers when we use cooling like air condition the walls retain the cool and release it slowly when we stop cooling the house.

Rammed Earth wall can last 1000 years

When properly being build, rammed earth wall can withstand the test of time with free maintenance as this walls don’t need plaster or paint, so no need to renew anything. archaeological evidence suggests that some rammed earth structures could last for more than 1,000 years.

When you compare the cost of this construction with other modern materials, this environmentally-friendly choice almost always comes out ahead.

The Women’s Microfinance Co-op

Technique: Rammed Earth & Cseb

In collaboration with Conscious Impact, an American organization situated in Takure, a small village in Sindhupalchok, one of the most affected districts in Nepal after 2015 earthquake.

We built a rammed earth office and meeting hall and a toilet-shower room built from CSEB for the local women’s financial cooperative.

Rammed earth is an ancient building method which using local earth mixes with small gravel, that is being tamped and compacted in temporary frames to create walls, in the same way, that nature creates rock.

is simple to construct, affordable, strong, and durable.

More about Rammed Earth – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rammed_earth
More about CSEB – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compressed_earth_block

About the project

The Women’s Co-op currently functions as a micro-finance group with approximately 730 members from various households in the Nawalpur district. Each month, the women pay a membership fee of 100 rupees (1 USD) which qualifies them to apply for loans anywhere from 5,000 to 50,000 rupees. Most families in our area are practicing agriculturists whose work simply provides enough for basic necessities. These loans allow opportunities to invest in livestock, provide simple necessities for their households, or manage a medical emergency.

Sunita Tamang’s home

Technique: Earthbags

In collaboration with Conscious Impact, we built an earthbag home for a local community member, Sunita Tamang.

Sunita has been raising her three children on her own while working since she lost her husband just before the 2015 earthquakes. After nearly four months of construction, Sunita now has a new earthquake-resistant home which is the first of it’s kind in her community.

About the project

we trained and created a unique team of local community members with international volunteers supervised by experienced earthbag builder.

Earthbag is a technique that uses rice bags that are being staffed with sifted local soil and manually compacted by metal tamper, each course of the bag is laid one on top of another connected by 2 layers of barb wire and nailed with metal rebar that going through 6 layers of bags. there is concrete beam on the top to connect all the building walls and make a good foundation to lay the roof on top of the walls.

With a specific design, this technique is earthquake safe, fast to build and affordable and can be built by unskilled labor
